The Stedman whirlybirds

Forgive the sloppy metaphor, but sometimes I think of my time in Paris as being a flowering maple tree and all those exceptional people I met eventually whirlybirded away just like those magical maple keys. Now, more than a decade later, some of those seeds have struck fertile soil and have become impressive trees of their own.

Take the Stedman brothers. When I met Scott and Daniel in Paris, they were exuberantly whirling maple keys. And now, after seeding nicely in Brooklyn, they are their very own maple trees. Just look at this brilliant portrait of them and their Northside festival in New York magazine.

I guess all cities and places have their maples trees and every person has times in their life when they find themselves amid a flowering maple tree. Looking back at my life, the two most poignant moments of flourishment were journalism school and Paris, and today when I examine the landscape of my friendships it is forested by trees whose seeds developed during those times.

Well, that metaphor is pretty darn dead. So, since New York magazine didn’t give you a picture of Scott and Daniel, here they are as I remember them:
